TerraCycle is the revolutionary upcycling company started by Tom Szaky when he was a 19 year old Princeton student. Just seven years ago, Szaky began viewing waste (which usually has negative value - people pay to have it taken away) as a valuable raw material.
By seperating according to waste stream, TerraCycle transforms it from discarded rubbish into valuable raw materials - commodities.
TerraCycle's Upcycling Brigades are the core of the organization, making Szaky's grand idea possible. TerraCycle provides Schools, churches, and non-profit organizations with shipping materials and postage. Participants are then paid to collect non-recyclable food packaging: chip bags, cookie packages, and candy wrappers to name a few. This benefits participating organizations, and TerraCycle ends up with a highly organized warehouse full of raw materials. One of TerraCycle's newest Brigades is made possible by a partnership with Frito-Lay. For every bag a brigade collects and sends to TerraCycle, Frito-Lay will donate two cents to the participant's chosen charity. Initially, there are 1,000 collection sites and more are expected to be added during the year.
