Palm has released the second small update for the Palm Pre's operating system in as many weeks. This makes a few changes to the way this smartphone synchronizes with both Google and Exchange. It also fixes a few bugs.
Unlike with Palm OS-based devices from this company, installing webOS 1.0.3 does not involve erasing everything on the smartphone, and can be done in a few minutes.
Before the debut of the Pre and the webOS, Palm committed to releasing free software updates to enhance its new generation of products. There was some skepticism of this at the time, as software updates for this company's Palm OS-based models were few and far between.
According to this company, webOS 1.0.3 does not include any new software. It does, however, offer the following changes:
i)The sync interval for Google contacts and events has been decreased from every few hours to every 15 minutes.
ii)Non-SSL Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) mail servers are now supported.
Previously, alarms set to go off only on weekdays would also go off on weekends. This has been fixed.
iii)Events created in Google Calendar — either on the phone or online — that contain a symbol or accented character in the event name can now synchronize. Before now, they could not.
Power performance in areas where wireless coverage is sporadic or unavailable has been improved.
