HP introduced Compaq 610 and 515 laptops

HP on Tuesday announced it new low budget business laptop Compaq 515 and 610 laptops for Mobile professionals Both models have been designed to accommodate the performance requirements of business users and come built with a choice for Intel or AMD processors

Asus announces new laptop range

ASUS has updated the Eee range with the Seashell family with its whole new netbook design and two new colours - white and pink - to add to Asus' familar black.

The new range is supposedly reminiscent of clear blue oceans, soft silky sand and seashells. We can't see any of this in these netbooks, but perhaps it's down to the fact that all the devices shipped to the INQ have been jet black, an unusual colour for the sea unless its sporting an oilslick.

The white model especially, says Asus, shows off the cough design concept which will be the basis of all upcoming Eee PCs.

The imaginatively entitled Asus 1005HA is the bigger brother of the 1008HA and more or less replaces the Eee PC 1000HE from earlier this year. The specifications of the 1005HA are fairly identical to the 1000HE, but Asus has changed the outer appearance and the inside layout, increased battery life and decreased weight.

Talking of batteries, the 1005HA has a removable battery unlike the 1008HA. It also has a 160GB hard disc drive, as does the 1008HA.

There are two models to the 1005HA series, one with a 1.66GHz N280 processor and one with the 1.6GHz N270 that we saw. The other changes in the N280 version are a 1.3 megapixel webcam compated to our 0.3MP and the inclusion of Bluetooth.

The 1005HA arrives with the Intel 945GSE chipset running the GMA 950 integrated graphics, a regular favourite of netbooks. Normally, it can hold its own in terms of graphics but we found it distinctly lacking in beefiness coupled with this processor.

This device didn't want to play any HD content from YouTube or BBC iPlayer. We have seen the more powerful N280 version handle the same content happily, if a little jerky at times, with caching working better instead of streaming. The 1005HA onboard went into over drive whilst cooling down the CPU as it struggled to play YouTube video.

The device has an LED back-lit WSVGA 10.1-inch display capable of a 1024x600 resolution, which is becoming a common size in netbooks. It's much better than the 7-inch netbook screens of yesteryear, for everything from web browsing to knocking out email.

The keyboard has changed somewhat from previous Eee PC models, with a wider flatter key layout that is said to be just eight percent smaller than a full sized keyboard. One of the more welcomed additions is the full sized shift key, where past netbooks from Asus came with a half sized version that irked many, including the INQ.

The touchpad now has a raised Braille-esque tactile feel, which is easy to use. it also provides the ability to pan in and out of webpages and documents, operating much like the ‘pinch to zoom in and zoom out' feature on an Iphone.

In continuous use the three-cell battery lasted two hours and thirty minutes.

New Widescreen LCD monitor from HP

HP has announced HP 2709m 27-inches Full HD Widescreen LCD monitor. The new monitor claims to give a new visual experience for movies, photos, and games.

HP 2709m monitor has got an aspect ratio of 16:9 and with dynamic contrast ratio of 30000:1. and a resolution of 1920×1080.The monitor can also be tilted and swiveled to provide better viewing angles. The dimensions are 26.43″(width), 18.45″(height) , 8.41″(depth), the monitor comes equipped with 4 watt speakers. It weighs around 9.6kg.Its features then this cool LCD offers two HDMI inputs, one DVI and one VGA port along with two in-build speakers of 2-watt.

The new monitor comes at a price of Rs. 22,500.

'Invisibility Cloak' May Protect Buildings Against Earthquakes

Researchers at the University of Liverpool in the United kingdom have developed a new technology, which has the ability to 'cloak' or protect buildings and large structures from earthquakes.

Basically, there are two types of seismic waves produced when an earthquake occurs - body waves and surface waves. Body waves travel through the earth, while surface waves travel across the surface of the earth.

The new cloaking technology controls the path of surface waves, which causes the most damage to surface structures such as buildings. Depending on the strength of an earthquake or tremor, the surface waves are usually responsible for the most substantial loss and destruction during or after the earthquake.

The new technology involves using concentric rings made of plastic, which may be fitted to the Earth’s surface. These concentric rings are used to divert surface waves during an earthquake. The waves traveling through the 'cloak' of concentric rings are compressed into small fluctuations of pressure and density by controlling the stiffness and elasticity of the rings. This causes the waves to pass smoothly into the material. The interesting part of this is that the path of the surface waves may be made into the shape of an arc, in order to direct the waves outside the protective 'cloak'.

By installing these types of concentric rings into the foundations of buildings and larger structures, the technology may be able to make a building almost invisible to earthquakes...or to put it in better terms - almost invisible to the surface shock waves that pass through the surrounding area.

Sebastien Guenneau, from the University’s Department of Mathematics, Stefan Enoch and Mohamed Farhat from the Fresnel Institute (CNRS) in Marseilles explained that they are able to 'tune' the cloak to the differing frequencies of incoming waves. A pair of rings is installed for each small frequency range, which then basically disperses the effects of each frequency range.

Sebastien Guenneau says the waves are then directed outside the cloak, and return to their previous size. He also added that the work has enormous potential for offering protection in densely populated areas of the world most at risk of from earthquakes. Their challenge is now to turn the theory into a practical application - and at the moment, experiments re being conducted on a small scale.

If we understand it correctly, this technology makes a building 'invisible' to seismic activity by allowing shock waves to pass through the area, without actually having any effect on the building itself. The University of Liverpool is a member of the Russel Group of research-intensive institutions in the United Kingdom, which attracts various collaborative and contract research commissions, both nationally and internationally.
